The Stunning, Coastal MTB Challenge
Spyglass 40 Kaikoura
Spyglass is postponed due to effects of the Nov 14th earthquake, but watch out for details of an exciting fun ride being held in Kaikoura - Spring 2017
The 20 or Spyglass 40?
Choose your challenge
The Spyglass 40 is a brand new MTB challenge on ‘Spyglass’ - a plot of pristine farmland sweeping between the mountains and the sea on the stunning Kaikoura coast. Choose your distance: one lap of 20km or two laps for the full 40km - double the fun and double the WOW.
Spyglass is run on well-formed farm tracks with around 20% across clear pasture land. It’s steep enough to challenge experienced riders, but we reckon anyone keen enough could do it (even if you need to get off and push here and there).
The expansive views and smooth downhill runs are well worth the effort.
Entrants must be at least 15yrs of age - there is an element of risk here - mostly from getting distracted by the views!
Enter as an individual or get a team together and come and enjoy all the Kaikoura region has to offer.

Unique & Spectacular
Spyglass 40 is held on a unique piece of private land, not open at any other time of year or for any other event.
The magnificent coastal terrain offers panoramic views north to Kaikoura and the Seaward Kaikoura ranges and south to Claverley and Conway Flat. The Pacific Ocean surrounds you and stretches to the horizon. If you had time, you would see NZ fur seals lazing on the rocks below you.
Come and enjoy coast side Mountain Biking like no other.
Access to Spyglass 40 is at the Okarahia Stream rest area in the Hundalees, 29km South of Kaikoura. The drive is approx. 140km from Christchurch and 170km from Picton on State Highway 1.
Registration open from 8:30am
About Spyglass 40
The Spyglass 40 is an event conceived and run by the Lions Club of Kaikoura, with the support of Sport
Tasman.
We want to create a fun challenge that gets people motivated and on their bikes, that will build year
after year as people return and rope in their mates.
This project is extra special to us because 100% of profits will go back into the community in two key areas:
• developing a new bike park in the Ocean Ridge area of Kaikoura
• establishing an outdoor pursuits programme for children and young people in Kaikoura
We are deeply passionate about both of these areas.
The MTB Park is to be part of the proposed Kaikoura Trail, which when completed will be a world class
network encompassing ocean, mountains, rivers and native forest. Some segments of the trail are already
established and have been of enormous benefit to the bikers, runners and walkers of the local community, but
the potential is to create an attraction that will add to the national and international appeal of the Canterbury
region.
The Outdoor Pursuits programme is a partnership between Sport Tasman and local schools, and aims to get
children and young people ‘hooked’ on being active in the outdoors, making the most of the many
opportunities and resources available in the Kaikoura region. A pilot programme is being activated in Term 4 of
2016.
